Frequently Asked Questions:
What should I expect of my first visit?
If you didn't print off the intake form the Practitioner will require you fill out a client intake and health history form. Afterwards the Practitioner will begin with asking you general questions to establish specific areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions that need to be addressed, and to determine if massage is appropriate for you. The Practitioner may perform certain assessments/testing to evaluate your condition or to see if you have any presenting complaints.
Where will my massage session take place?
In Studio: Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable room. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort.
Do I need to remove all of my clothes?
It’s your choice. Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. Most people undress completely or wear underwear and/or shorts. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped during the entire session. Some orthopedic sessions it is recommended shorts be worn to allow for stretching without being encumbered by sheets.
Will wearing clothing affect the benefit?
No. If you wear clothing during the massage, make sure the massage therapist can move the parts of your body you expect to be massaged through your clothes. Remember, chair massage is given without removing any clothes.
Will the Practitioner be present when I disrobe?
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with clean sheets and blankets.
Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What should I do during my session?
Make yourself comfortable. If an adjustment in position is needed the Practitioner will adjust you or ask you to move what is needed. Feel free to move at any time to make yourself more comfortable. Many people take this time to close their eyes and relax. This is your massage, whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.
Do I need to talk?
Some people like to talk during a massage session, while others remain silent. The practitioner will take their cue from you.
What if I fall asleep?
It happens! In the world of a massage therapist, that is a high honor as it suggests we have ushered you into relaxation appropriately. If you do, your massage therapist will wake you at the end of your session. Most people feel invigorated by massage.
What will I feel during a massage?
This usually depends on the technique or treatment being used. In a general Swedish massage your session will include broad, flowing strokes used to calm your nervous system and encourage relaxation of exterior muscle tension. As your body relaxes pressure will gradually increase to address tension in specific areas. A cream is used to allow muscles to be massaged without causing friction to the skin. Orthopedic massage sessions include more intense techniques, but all are performed within your tolerance levels.
Will it hurt?
If you are experiencing pain before the session begins, there may be some pain as the issue is addressed. It should never be unbearable! Give the massage therapist complete and accurate health information and let your massage therapist know your needs at any time. There are multiple techniques that can be used to address painful areas. Communication is key!
What should I do if I experience discomfort?
During the massage session, tell your massage therapist if you have any discomfort, whether it is from the massage or from any distractions related to the environment, including amount of pressure, speed of movement, room temperature, music volume, or lighting.
Will the oils used make me break out?
Hypo-allergenic products are used to avoid irritation of sensitive skin. If you have an allergy or sensitivity to specific oils or lotion, please let the Practitioner know so another product may be substituted.
How will I feel afterward?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains that have derived from tension or repetitive activity. There can be an initial period of sluggishness as your body awakens from it's relaxed state. It is recommended to drink plenty of water following your massage. After this period passes (within 24 hours) people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity, which can last for days.
Do I need to leave immediately when my massage is done?
Take your time. Sit up slowly and drink plenty of water. When you are ready you may dress and leave the treatment room.
